Colonial senior earns first weekly accolade of his career
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW men's basketball senior guard James Bishop IV was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday after his 40-point performance guided the Colonials to a road win at Loyola Chicago.
Bishop, who has finished second in the A-10 in scoring in each of his first two seasons donning the Buff & Blue and paces the conference with 21.9 ppg this year, earns a weekly award for the first time in his career.
The Baltimore native stole the show in Saturday's showdown with the Ramblers, scoring 29 of his 40 points after halftime and putting the nail in the proverbial coffin with eight free throw makes in the final minute. Bishop scored his 40 points on just 18 shots, making 12 including a season-best five triples. He also connected on 11-of-12 free throws and dished out a game-high seven assists.
Bishop became the second player in the country with multiple 40-point performances this season and has surpassed 30 points three times this year after doing so just once in his first 65 career games. He also moved from 43rd to 38th on GW's all-time scoring list with 1,133 points and is now seventh in Buff & Blue annals with 18.6 ppg in his career, the highest mark since all-time leading scorer Chris Monroe averaged 19.1 ppg from 1999-2003.
Bishop has become an efficient scorer this season, ranking seventh in the league by shooting a career-high 46.8% from the floor while taking the most attempts in the league. He enters the week ninth in the country with 21.9 ppg, but also is averaging a career-best 5.0 assists per game, third-most in the A-10 and 38th nationally. He is one of just two players in Division I to average 21.0 ppg and 5.0 apg.
Bishop will look to continue his strong play in true road games this season, when he is averaging 36.7 ppg, as the Colonials visit Richmond on Wednesday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
