Colonials put four in double figures, improve to 3-2 in the A-10
FAIRFAX, Va. - It wasn't without drama at the end, but GW men's basketball held off a George Mason charge to hand the Patriots their first home setback of the season in a 78-75 victory on Monday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.
The Colonials led by 10 with 2:58 remaining following a Brendan Adams 3-pointer, his fifth of the game. Mason countered with the next nine points, closing to within two, 77-75, with a minute remaining. However, the GW defense was up for the challenge, forcing four Mason misses over the final three possessions to hang on for the 78-75 triumph.
Despite the slim final margin, the Buff & Blue were in control for the majority of the matinee, leading for the final 37:48 of the contest. GW enjoyed its largest lead of the day, 25-11, midway through the opening stanza and took a five-point cushion, 30-25, into intermission after a first half that featured nearly as many turnovers (20) as made shots (22).
Maximus Edwards, who was named A-10 Rookie of the Week two hours before tip-off, then opened the second half on a personal 7-0 run to stretch the lead back to double digits. That set the tone for a wildly entertaining second stanza with the teams combining for 98 points and both shooting over 54% from the floor.
Leading by three with nine minutes left, James Bishop IV scored five consecutive points to push the cushion back to eight. Mason would hit just four field goals the rest of the way as GW survived for the win.
Bishop was one of four Colonials in double digits with 19 points and eight assists, one shy of a career high. Adams paced the Buff & Blue with 22 points and eight boards, while knocking down 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Edwards scored 14 with six rebounds and Ricky Lindo Jr. provided yet another all-around masterclass with 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.
GW hit 10 3-pointers on the day against the nation's 31st-best 3-point defense, knocking down double-digit triples for the fifth time this season. The Colonials also forced 17 Mason turnovers leading to a 17-11 edge in points of miscues.
After winning its second A-10 road game of the season, just the third team in the league to accomplish the feat thus far, GW returns home for its next two contests. First up is a nationally-televised clash with preseason favorite Dayton on Saturday at the Smith Center. Tip is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on USA Network.
