Former Alabama State guard deepens Buff & Blue backcourt
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball head coach Chris Caputo announced the addition of graduate student guard E.J. Clark to the program on Monday. Clark spent the last two seasons at Alabama State after beginning his college career at Bossier Parish Community College.
"E.J. really fits our program in a number of ways," Caputo said. "Namely, he provides depth at the guard position, is an excellent student and has exceptional character.
"His ability to play the point guard position and his shooting ability, coupled with his experience in college basketball, gives us a great addition to the roster."
Clark appeared in 41 games for Alabama State over the last two years, starting 21, including the final 20 for the Hornets last season. He averaged 8.0 ppg during his senior campaign, an improvement of more than two points per game compared to 2020-21. Clark's increase in production came primarily via an increase in efficiency at the 3-point line, where he connected at a 42.6% clip in 2021-22. Per Synergy Sports, Clark had the highest catch-and-shoot points per possession in the SWAC.
A native of Dallas, Texas, the 5-foot-11 Clark had 74 assists in 41 games for ASU, posting a 1.46 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also took care of business at the charity stripe, finishing third in the SWAC in free throw percentage (.853) last season.
"I'm excited to be a part of the GW program," Clark said. "I chose GW because of the great education I will receive, the location of the school and the overall culture of the university. Plus, the coaching staff and I share a common goal, and that's to win!"
Prior to his two years at Alabama State, Clark averaged 11.0 ppg in two years at Bossier Parish CC. He earned All-Region Second Team honors as a sophomore after averaging 14.1 ppg and shooting 46.6% from the floor and 40.6% from beyond the arc in addition to dishing out three assists per game.
A prolific scorer in high school, Clark totaled 2,395 points during his All-State career at McKinney High School in Dallas. He earned his undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Alabama State and enroll in the Sports Management master's program at GW.
