Former three-star commit is first external addition for Coach Caputo
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball head coach Chris Caputo announced the signing of Kansas State transfer Maximus Edwards to the program on Friday. Edwards has four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting in his lone college campaign last season.
"We are excited for Max Edwards to join our program," Caputo said. "Max embodies all the qualities we want in our student-athletes both on the court and off. Max's production level at an elite-level high school and in the EYBL give him the opportunity to contribute in the Atlantic 10 right away."
Edwards redshirted at Kansas State last year following a preseason leg injury. He was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals coming out of Our Savior Lutheran School in the Bronx, N.Y., in 2021.
"GW is in a great area, and I feel like I can make an immediate impact," Edwards said about picking the Buff & Blue. "I've enjoyed getting to know the great coaching staff. They've made my family and I feel at home."
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound wing hails from Stratford, Conn., where he began his high school career at Bunnell High School. In two years, Edwards became the program's all-time leading scorer with more than 1,600 points and was named to numerous All-State teams in 2018 and 2019.
He then transferred to the prestigious Our Savior Lutheran program where he played alongside future high-major players Posh Alexander (St. John's), Dylan Addae-Wusu (St. John's) and Max Amadasun (Pitt/St. Bonaventure). In two years, Edwards contributed to 50 wins, including reaching the quarterfinals of The Grind Session World Championship in 2020-21 where he was named to the All-Event Team and won the slam dunk competition.
Edwards averaged a team-best 19.9 ppg on 57.5% shooting in his senior campaign, including firing at 35.9% clip from beyond the arc. He also posted 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
While participating on the AAU circuit for NY Lightning, Edwards had the highest field goal percentage around the rim and third-best 2-point percentage overall of all 2021 guard prospects in the 2019 Nike EYBL. Additionally, he had the fourth-highest offensive rating, sixth-best offensive rebounding rate and ranked 16th in scoring among all members of his 2021 class.
