Buff & Blue will travel to Colorado for national tournament
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball is headed back to the postseason as part of the National Invitational Softball Championship.
Seeded fifth out of 12 competing teams, the Buff and Blue will face 12th-seeded Kansas in a 1 p.m. (ET) first pitch in their opener on Friday at TC Colorado Field in Fort Collins, Colo. The winner advances to face No. 4 Central Arkansas on Saturday, while the loser will take on either Stephen F. Austin, Bowling Green or Virginia on Sunday in the double-elimination first round of an event billed as the NIT of Softball.
The opening Super Regional Round determines the bracket for the four-team Championship Round that runs May 25-26 at the same field.
It's the third straight completed season that the program has earned a postseason berth after playing in the NCAA Tournament last spring and the NISC in 2019.
Led by A-10 Player of the Year Alexa Williams and A-10 Pitcher of the Year Sierra Lange, GW earned a bid in the national field to close out a season in which it claimed its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title with a 21-3 record and posted a top-100 RPI ranking with a 36-15 overall.
This week, the Buff and Blue battled over three days at the A-10 Championship to get within one victory of a return to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Fordham in the winner-take-all title game. Lange, Williams and Hannah Eslick were named to the All-Championship Team for their efforts at the tournament.
In its 2019 NISC appearance, GW went 2-2 at the Liberty Regional, earning wins over Marshall and Appalachian State.
This time, the Buff and Blue will find a new format at the single site in Colorado in the tournament's return after a two-year hiatus. The bracket features four Power 5 programs and eight quality mid-major clubs from around the country.Â
GW will begin its run vs. a Kansas squad that has a 16-34 record facing tough competition in the Big 12. Virginia (27-24) is the tournament's top seed with Baylor (28-24), UNLV (38-13) and Central Arkansas (35-20) next in line.
