Buff & Blue set for pair on Wednesday
GW softball looks to extend an 11-game winning streak on Wednesday, welcoming Hampton to the Mount Vernon Campus for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. All of the action is set to be broadcast via ESPN+.
With a sweep, the Buff and Blue can equal the program record for consecutive victories. They won 13 in a row from March 9-24, 2018.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW had a break from competition last weekend following an 8-7 win over Georgetown last Wednesday.
The Buff and Blue built a 7-2 lead through three innings and then held on to beat their District neighbors. Maddy Dwyer closed out the Hoyas with the potential tying run on second, recording a game-ending K for her first save of the season.
It was another strong team offensive effort for GW with eight different student-athletes scoring a run in the victory.
Sierra Lange drove in three with a bases-loaded triple, Maggie Greco stroked a two-run double and Hannah Eslick went 3-for-3 with a double, plus a walk.
SIERRA'S SURGE:Â Lange has been one of the catalysts of the 11-game winning streak, exhibiting the all-around excellence that has been her calling card over five seasons in Buff and Blue.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, has won all seven of her starts in the run while recording a 2.10 ERA with 43 K in 40 innings and a .203 opponents' batting average.
At the plate, Lange is slashing .412/.524/.676 with six extra-base hits, 12 runs scored, six RBIs and five steals during the winning streak. She's reached base in all 11 victories and carries a 13-game on-base streak into Wednesday's twin bill.
ON THE DOUBLE: With nine doubles through 27 games, Alessandra Ponce has 51 career two-baggers, which is tied for second in Buff and Blue history with Victoria Valos. The graduate student from Henderson, Nev., is just three behind former teammate Jenna Cone for the program's all-time record.
Entering Wednesday's action, Ponce ranks 15th among active D-I student-athletes in career doubles and second in the A-10 behind only Sadie Wise of Saint Louis (55).
SCOUTING HAMPTON: Hampton sits at 13-23 on the season after being swept by Longwood in a Big South series last weekend. Janae Lyles is the Pirates' top hitter with a .340 batting average and nine extra-base hits, while Emily Workman (6-4, 4.13 ERA in 72 innings) and Kiaya Jesui (4-9, 4.38 ERA in 76 innings) have led their pitching staff.
UP NEXT:Â GW is back at The Vern this weekend, hosting Dayton in a three-game Atlantic 10 series. The Buff and Blue will face the Flyers in a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday with first pitch set for noon both days.
