Softball pair honored after 4-0 week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sierra Lange and Maddie Spell of George Washington softball have earned Atlantic 10 weekly awards after helping the Buff and Blue to four wins vs. conference competition last week.
Lange was named A-10 Player of the Week in recognition of her efforts as an offensive catalyst at the top of the lineup, while Spell claimed Rookie of the Week honors after reaching base eight times over the four games.
Lange set the table for an offense that averaged more than nine runs per game vs. George Mason and Rhode Island with a .538/.611/1.000 slash line. The graduate student from Texas had at least one hit and one walk in each game and tallied six RBIs and six runs scored along the way. She cracked a pair of home runs and also stole three bases on the week.
Lange equaled her career high with three runs scored in an 8-2 win over URI on Saturday to begin that series, and she finished the weekend with a 3-for-4 performance that included a homer and two RBIs in a 9-4 victory. In addition to her offensive exploits, Lange went 3-0 in the circle, tallying a 1.91 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 22 innings.
It's the first Player of the Week award for Lange, who has been honored as Pitcher of the Week nine times in her decorated career, including three times this spring. She joins Mia Parker and Alexa Williams on the list of Colonials who have landed Player of the Week honors this season.
Spell reached base in all four games, slashing .300/.533/.400 thanks to three hits and five walks with three runs scored and two RBIs. The Georgia native reached base three times in the second game at URI with a hit and two walks as part of a 15-10 win, and in the series finale, she had a double and a walk in another victory. It's the first A-10 Rookie of the Week nod for Spell and the first time the program has earned the award this season.
GW is back in action on Tuesday afternoon, making the trip to Delaware State for a non-conference matchup. The Buff and Blue then host Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon before welcoming Saint Louis to the Mount Vernon Campus for Senior Weekend.
