Buff & Blue to return to Hawaii for first time since winning title in 2014
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball will participate in the 2022 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, it was announced on Tuesday. The 13th edition of the ESPN Events tournament will be played December 22, 23 and 25 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The eight-team field features the host Hawai'i in addition to Iona, Pepperdine, Seattle, SMU, Utah State and Washington State. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through the bracket with the Championship on Christmas Day.
Four teams in the field - SMU (49), Washington State (58), Utah State (63) and Iona (85) - are ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA's NET Ranking, while Seattle earned a share of the regular season WAC Championship this season. GW is a combined 2-4 all-time against the tournament field, but has not faced any of the teams since 2008.
Headlined by returning All-Conference honorees Joe Bamisile and James Bishop, as well as A-10 All-Rookie selection Brayon Freeman, GW will be making its sixth trip to Hawai'i in December, and its first voyage since winning the Diamond Head Classic in 2014. That trip, the Colonials bested Ohio and Colorado before upending #11 Wichita State in the Championship.
Tickets are expected to go on sale in October. Additional information about the tournament, as well as Hawaiian Airlines and Outrigger Hotels & Resorts travel, can be found on the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic website at hawaiianairlinesdiamondheadclassic.com .
