Buff & Blue pair honored after 6-0 week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Alexa Williams and Sierra Lange have earned Atlantic 10 weekly awards after GW softball's 6-0 week in which it swept a pair of conference series.
Williams landed Player of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks, while Lange picked up her second Pitcher of the Week nod of the spring.
Williams had a sensational week, homering in five of the six games while piling up 12 RBIs. The sophomore from El Cajon, Calif., slashed .438/.571/1.438 with six of her seven hits going for extra bases.
Williams homered in all three games at Saint Joseph's, highlighted by her first career grand slam in an 8-0 run-rule win in the series finale. Against Fordham, she hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning in a 5-4 comeback win on Saturday and then cracked another two-run shot in a 3-1 victory in Sunday's final game.
Williams was also honored by the conference on March 8 after the Liberty Invitational. She now has 11 extra-base hits in her past 11 games and leads the Buff and Blue in home runs (six), total bases (48), RBIs (27) and slugging percentage (.727).
Lange shared the pitching award with Chloe Wendling of Saint Louis after going 4-0 with a 1.68 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 25 innings.Â
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, allowed just one run in 11 innings over two starts vs. Saint Joseph's in the middle of the week and then tossed a pair of complete games on the weekend vs. Fordham, including a season-high 10-strikeout effort in a 3-1 victory on Sunday to finish the series sweep. She also helped herself at the plate, slashing .353/.522/.647 with two doubles, a home run and six runs scored.
Lange was also named the conference Pitcher of the Week on March 1 after the Liberty Classic and has now won the award eight times in her decorated career. The veteran hurler leads the conference in wins (10) and strikeouts (89) this spring.
GW is back in action at the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday, welcoming Coppin State for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
