Softball standouts honored after Liberty Classic
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following GW softball's winning weekend at the Liberty Classic, Mia Parker and Sierra Lange have been honored by the Atlantic 10.
Parker was named A-10 Player of the Week, while Lange collected the conference's Pitcher of the Week award for the seventh time in her decorated career.
Lange was also listed among the nation's top performers by the NFCA in its weekly awards release.Â
Parker provided a powerful offensive jolt last weekend, slashing .417/.462/.917 with three doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored over four games. The senior from Los Angeles cracked a pair of doubles in Friday's 9-1 win over Maine before turning in a career performance on Saturday in an 8-2 defeat of Charleston Southern in which she went 3-for-4 with a double and her first long ball of the season. She also knocked in a run in a 4-2 victory vs. the Buccaneers to close out the 3-1 weekend.
It's the first career A-10 weekly award for Parker, who is off to a fantastic start with more hits through 12 games (10) than her career total entering the spring (nine).
Lange won all three of her starts on the weekend, compiling a 1.75 ERA with 21 strikeouts vs. two walks over 20 innings.Â
After earning a complete-game win over Maine in Friday's opener, the graduate student from Plano, Texas, handled all 14 frames in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Charleston Southern, yielding just four runs on six total hits on the day. She saved her best for last, retiring the final 14 Buccaneers that she faced in the finale.
Lange also helped her own cause at the plate, slashing .308/.400/.769 with a single, a double and a home run, plus a team-high six runs scored and three RBIs.
The 2021 A-10 Pitcher of the Year, Lange previously won this award three times last spring, twice as a sophomore in 2019 and once as a rookie in 2018.
GW returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader vs. Lehigh and No. 25 Notre Dame to begin the three-day Liberty Invitational.
