DiTomaso provides game-winning hit in 10th
ARLINGTON, Va. - Down to the final out in its home opener, GW baseball pulled out a memorable win to open the 2022 home campaign, 8-7 in 10 innings over Towson.
Trailing 7-5 in the home half of the ninth, Cade Fergus strode to the dish with two gone and two runners on via two Towson errors. Fergus then smashed a double off the wall in center to drive in the tying runs and send the game into extra innings.
In the 10th, it was Steve DiTomaso who provided the heroics with a two-out, jam-shot single over the third baseman to score pinch-runner Ty Acker from second with the game-winning run.
GW rallied from a six-run deficit in the fourth inning to earn its first win of the year. Towson scored a run in the second, three in the third and three more in the fourth to assume a 7-1 lead.
The Buff & Blue responded with four runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-5. After three straight one-out walks, Tim Nicholson singled in a run and was followed by DiTomaso with an RBI single. Two more runs scored on bases-loaded hit batters to narrow the deficit.
From there, it was GW's pitching that kept the Colonials in the game as Chris Kahler, Liam Best and Benny Wilson held the Tigers at bay in the final six innings. Kahler retired nine of the final 10 he faced, Best authored a pair of scoreless frames and Wilson worked around a pair of runners in the 10th to earn his first career win.
In total, GW pitching allowed just two hits and five baserunners from the fifth inning on.
Offensively, DiTomaso's game-winning knock was part of a 3-for-6 day with two RBI. Fergus drove in three while going 1-for-3 at the dish.
GW will look to continue the momentum in its home series this weekend against Maine. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
