Wong brings over a decade of coaching experience to the DMV
WASHINGTON - Justin Wong has joined the GW volleyball program as an assistant coach, Head Coach Katie Reifert announced Monday.
Wong comes to the District after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 2018. Wong, who brings a decade of collegiate coaching experience, also served as an assistant coach at Georgetown for three seasons.
"We are excited to have Justin joining the GW volleyball program!" said Reifert. "HE is a talented and passionate coach that will bring a wealth of knowledge and championship experience to our program and student-athletes."
With the Islanders, Wong helped the team to an SLC Championship in 2021, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and fourth in program history. As part of that 2021 team, Wong coached the Player, Setter and Libero of the Year, a libero that led the country in digs per set.
In his third season with the Islanders, Wong helped guide the 2020 Player and Setter of the Year, coaching a team that was top-5 in kills per set and top-15 in hitting percentage among the nation.
At Georgetown, Wong coached a pair of Big East All-Conference selections, 27 Big East All-Academic selections and one AVCA All-Region selection. In addition, Wong played a critical role in developing Symone Speech and Alyssa Sinnette as the pair reached the 1,000 kill milestone in 2017.
Prior to his time in the District, Wong was a member of the Delaware State coaching staff, where he was promoted from the assistant coach to the associate head coach. Wong helped five players to all-tournament teams and served as the team's primary video and scouting analyst as well as the recruiting coordinator.
Wong spent 2012 at Ohio University as a volunteer assistant, helping with player development, opponent scouting and practice planning.
Wong's collegiate coaching career began at Miami University (Ohio), serving as a volunteer assistant before being promoted to interim assistant coach in 2011.
Outside of his collegiate resume, Wong coached 13 years of Junior Olympic volleyball, including leading one of the top-15 club teams at Dallas Skyline Juniors in 2012, and also gained club experience at Mintonette Sports in Columbus, Ohio. While at Mintonette, Wong led his team to second place at USA Jr. Nationals in the 17 National Division, ranking No. 40 in PrepVolleyball.com among all National 17s teams in the country. Wong also coached at Metro Volleyball Club in DC, where he assisted with the 16 travel team in 2016 and was head coach of the 14 travel team in 2016-17, having both teams qualify in the Open.
Wong played collegiately at Ohio State on the men's club team as an outside hitter. He earned his bachelor's degree in Sport & Leisure Studies: Coaching & Leisure Management in 2004 and obtained his master's degree in Sport Behavior & Performance at Miami University (Ohio) in 2011.
