Bystrom posted pair of diving wins at JMU
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In its final tune-up before the A-10 Championships, GW swimming and diving concluded its regular season over the weekend, competing at a pair of multi-day meets in Virginia.
Barbara Schaal made a shining collegiate debut to lead the swimming contingent at the Cavalier Invitational hosted by Virginia, while Spencer Bystrom paced the divers at JMU's Duke Dog Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., with a sweep of both boards behind a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores.
CAVALIER INVITE HIGHLIGHTS:
- A rookie from Germany, Schaal posted a pair of terrific qualifying swims on Saturday morning. Her 100 back time of 54.81 seconds ranks No. 2 in program history and third among A-10 competitors this season, while her 100 fly time of 55.60 seconds is good for No. 7 on the all-time top 10 list and ranks among the top five among conference competitors.
- Chloe Hernandez recorded an all-time top 10 time in the 50 free on Friday, touching in 24.81 seconds during prelims. The first-year from Florida also posted a season-best time in the 100 fly (:56.37).
- Justin Clark posted a season-best time in the 100 back (:50.65) before finishing fifth. The first-year from Massachusetts was also runner-up in the 200 back after posting a season-best time of 1:51.07 during prelims.
- Eddie Cosic landed fourth in the 100 breast in a season-best time of 57.28 seconds and duplicated that finish in the 200 breast (2:07.90).
- Senior Marissa Brannan clocked a career-best time in the 50 free (:24.81).
- Oscar Madsen posted a career-best time in the 100 free (:47.21) in a ninth-place finish.
DUKE DOG INVITE HIGHLIGHTS:
- On Saturday, Bystrom posted a career-best score of 300.70 on the 1-meter board to punch his ticket to the NCAA Zones meet, and the junior from Ohio later claimed the title there with a finals score of 282.35. He was in top form again on Sunday, winning the 3-meter board with a career-high finals score of 325.85 to hit another Zones cut.
- Already qualified for Zones on 3-meter, Jamie Doak placed third in the event at JMU with a finals score of 282.75. Dara Reyblat (eighth), Caitlin Inall (10th) and Fiona Berk (12th) also qualified for the final there.
- Doak also eclipsed the Zones qualifying mark on 1-meter Sunday with her finals score of 275.55, good for another third-place finish. Reyblat finished sixth with a personal-best score of 257.40, and Inall (10th) and Olivia Rosen (12th) were also finalists there.
UP NEXT: GW heads to the A-10 Championships, which run Feb. 16-19 at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
