Sunday's tip-off between the Colonials and Rams is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+
WASHINGTON- Still searching for its first A-10 win of the season, George Washington women's basketball will head south on I-95 for a conference clash with VCU on Sunday. Tip-off between the Colonials and Rams is slated for 1 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
MAXINE IS MONEY
Wednesday night against St. Bonaventure, first-year Maxine Engel showed that she can be an offensive catalyst for the Buff & Blue. The Memphis native scored a career-high 19 points on 80 percent shooting against the Bonnies, while also contributing seven rebounds and two steals.
Engel joins teammates Nya Lok and Sheslanie Laureano as the only student-athletes to score at least 19 points in a game this year. Additionally, Engel's 19 points are the most by a first-year since Ali Brigham scored 26 against VCU on Jan. 27, 2021.
STONY BROOK CONNECTION
When Caroline McCombs and Beth O'Boyle meet on the sidelines Sunday, it will mark the first matchup between the past two Stony Brook Seawolves head coaches.
O'Boyle served as the head coach of Stony Brook for three seasons between 2011 and 2014 before leaving to take her current position at VCU. During her stint on Long Island, O'Boyle saw her program increase its season wins total by 20 from her first season, which ended at 4-26, to her last season, a 24-9 campaign that ended with a WNIT berth.
McCombs, who succeeded O'Boyle, continued to build upon the program's success during her seven seasons on Long Island from 2014 to 2021. McCombs won 130 games during her Seawolves coaching career, giving her the title of winningest coach in Stony Brook history. She also took home the 2020 America East Coach of the Year award, and guided the Seawolves to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2021.
KYARA 1K
On Sunday against VCU, graduate student Kyara Frames will have a chance to reach a grand milestone: the 1,000 point plateau. Currently, Frames sits at 993 career points, just seven points shy of the 1K mark.
For Frames, the journey to 1,000 began on Nov. 10, 2017, when the Laurel, Md., native pocketed her first points against Maryland for the Albany Great Danes. Frames went on to score 893 points for Albany before dropping another 100 and counting as a Colonial. Should she reach the milestone, she will be the first GW student-athlete since 2018 to score her 1,000th point while wearing the Buff & Blue.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU, which entered this season picked fourth in the A-10, has struggled to find consistency over the course of the season. Entering Sunday, the Rams sit just one game above .500 overall at 9-8, as well as in the conference at 4-3.
The Rams' main offensive threat is Taya Robinson. Robinson, who was named to the A-10 First Team last year and picked in the preseason to repeat that honor, sits at sixth in the conference in points per game (15.7). While on offense, GW will have to watch out for Janika Griffith-Wallace, who has shown a knack for taking the ball away. Currently, the redshirt senior is averaging 2.2 steals a game, which is third best in the A-10.
HISTORY AGAINST VCU
As is the case with several of their A-10 opponents, the Colonials boast a winning record against the Rams. Entering Sunday, GW is 11-3 against VCU, including an impressive 6-1 against the Rams on the road.
