Lange delivers all-around effort in win over Rider
GREENSBORO, N.C. - As she has so many times during a decorated career in Buff and Blue, Sierra Lange delivered a tremendous all-around performance on Sunday afternoon to help GW softball earn a 4-1 win over Rider at the Spiro Classic.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, recorded two hits and scored twice while pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts to take down the Broncs.
The Buff and Blue settled for a doubleheader split after host UNC Greensboro won the weekend finale, 10-1 in six innings.
Alessandra Ponce had hits in both games and capped the weekend in North Carolina with a team-high .417 batting average, two extra-base hits and three RBIs.
GW 4, Rider 1:Â The Buff and Blue avenged a Saturday loss in defeating the Broncs in the opener.
GW took advantage of Rider mistakes in the opening frame, with Lange and Alexa Williams both scoring two-out runs courtesy of wild pitches for an early 2-0 lead.
The Buff and Blue added on with a sac fly from Abby Schaub to score Maddy Dwyer in the second inning, and after the Broncs got on the board in the fourth, Ponce restored the three-run cushion in the fifth with an RBI single.
Lange allowed seven hits over the seven innings but was able to avoid any major trouble thanks to her season-high K total and zero walks. The veteran right-hander got stronger as the outing went on, retiring her final eight batters on the way to her second win of the season.
Lange and Alexa Williams both contributed a pair of hits in the victory, while Mia Parker reached twice via a single and a walk.
UNCG 10, GW 1 (6 innings):Â The Buff and Blue's bid for a sweep fizzled in the late innings of the second game. The Spartans took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a three-run homer by Maycin Brown and then piled on a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth to win by run rule.
GW struck first, pushing across a run in the top of the second. Mia Parker doubled and came around to score on Maddie Spell's two-out RBI single up the middle.
Lange stayed in the circle and battled through four quality innings before the reigning Southern Conference champions got their offense rolling vs. the bullpen.
Meanwhile, the Buff and Blue bats were silenced by UNCG starter Reese Byrd. After scoring in the second, they managed just one hit over the final four frames.
Lange added a single in the second game and stole her third base of the season, while Ponce reached twice with a hit and a walk.
UP NEXT:Â GW travels to the Liberty Classic next Friday and Saturday for matchups vs. Maine, Charleston Southern and the host Flames.
