Lange pitched gem vs. the Tar Heels
COLUMBIA, S.C. - In its debut under Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker, GW softball battled North Carolina before dropping a 1-0 decision on Friday afternoon at the Gamecock Invitational.
Sierra Lange was tremendous in the circle for the Buff and Blue on Opening Day at Carolina Softball Stadium, but the Tar Heels triumphed in the pitchers' duel on the strength of an unearned run plated in the third inning.
The 2021 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, Lange flashed midseason form vs. an ACC opponent, allowing just two hits in her six-inning complete game. The graduate student struck out six against zero walks in her first outing since leading GW's historic push to a conference title and the NCAA Tournament last spring.
UNC took advantage of a pair of Buff and Blue errors to push across the game's lone run in the third. Pinch runner Carsyn Snead stole third on a swinging strikeout and headed home on an errant throw.
GW created offensive chances but left seven runners on base vs. UNC's Hannah George.
The Buff and Blue threatened in the opening inning, loading the bases with one out via a single, an error and a walk before a pair of strikeouts ended the frame. They also put runners on in the third, fourth and sixth against George, who worked around three singles and three walks.
Mia Parker accounted for two of the GW hits, and Maggie Greco supplied the other. Alessandra Ponce reached twice via walk in the season opener.
GW has three games remaining in its opening weekend, with a Saturday doubleheader vs. host South Carolina (3:30 p.m.) and Virginia (6 p.m.) up next. The clash vs. the Gamecocks will be broadcast via SEC Network+.
