Men's Basketball Falls to City Foe American, 69-64

Colonials held to season-low 64 points
WASHINGTON - Sometimes it doesn't matter who you play as much as it matters when you play them. That dynamic may have been at play when GW men's basketball hosted American on Saturday afternoon. The red-hot Eagles came to Smith Center having won six in a row, including a win at Georgetown. On the GW sidelines, the Buff and Blue were without starting center Hunter Dean, and showed some rust early after not playing since last Sunday, in a 69-64 defeat.
D.C. bragging rights were on the line and for at least another season, those rights go to American as the Patriot League favorite outplayed GW in several facets in this one.
James Bishop, who scored 50 points in two games last week, entered play averaging a healthy 22.3 points per game, good enough for seventh in the nation, and continued his double-figure ways with 14 points to go with a game-high seven assists, but it was American's Johnny O'Neil who took home game-high honors with 19 in 35:38 off the bench. The Eagles' reserves doubled-up GW's bench production, 24-12, in their five-point win. Minus Dean and with Noel Brown battling foul trouble, American also cleaned up the glass with a 37-26 rebounding advantage.
Ricky Lindo Jr. also fought through foul trouble to lead the Buff and Blue with 18 points and nine rebounds, along with a game-high three blocks, but it wasn't enough to overcome an American effort that cashed in on 24-of-48 field goals.
The game featured five ties and seven lead changes, and had the added excitement of a dog, who would later be a part of the halftime show, crash the court in the early going.
The Fightin' Dixons of Coppin State show next on GW's schedule, with the former Maryland Terrapin Juan Dixon-led Eagles coming to D.C. on Tuesday in the second leg of doubleheader with GW women's basketball at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
