Bishop provides team-leading 19, Edwards adds 18
WASHINGTON - If the unofficial start to the Chris Caputo era for GW men's basketball is any indication, the Buff and Blue can pack some offensive punch. Making the start in their first game experience on the Charles E. Smith Center floor, transfer students Max Edwards and EJ Clark found the iron kind in the cozy venue, as the pair connected on a combined 5-of-9 shooting from long range to spark a GW prolific attack from the home club in the 78-61 rout.
Mainstay James Bishop IV also had his fingerprints all over the win, effectively playing both on the ball and off, with his efficient, game-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-7 3pt. FG), and game-high six assists, showing off his Atlantic 10 All-Conference bonafides. Edwards would finish with 18 and Clark tallied 11, a promising sign for a backcourt that will be leaned upon to carry the club's scoring this season.
Minus the services of Brendan Adams and Hunter Dean due to injury, Clark, Qwanzi Samuels and Keegan Harvey, who also made his Smith Center debut on Sunday after transferring midseason last year, used their opportunity to get into the 3-point shooting show, with Samuels knocking down a pair in four attempts and the 6'11" Harvey stretching the floor for a triple in his two tries. As a team, GW shot 15-of-31 from three, with Ricky Lindo Jr., Amir Harris and Daniel Nixon also getting in on the act.
GW led wire-to-wire and owned a 29-point lead at its largest, having more than doubled up the visitors at 53-25 early in the second half.
With preseason practice and exhibition play now in the rear-view, the season starts in earnest when Virginia State comes to the District next Monday night, November 7, for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+. Prior to the game on Saturday, Raise High at GW returns for its third season on NBC Sports Washington at 11 a.m., with Caputo joined by contributor Jimmy Patsos to preview what's ahead in 2022-23.
