WASHINGTON - GW swimming and diving is back in action for the third time this year, heading to Annapolis, Maryland on Friday for a dual-meet against Navy. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be hosted at Lejeune Hall.
Last Time Out:
The Buff and Blue are coming off a dominant home meet against Old Dominion and James Madison. GW took first place in 22 of the 32 events and saw strong performances from sophomores Moriah Freitas and Connor Rodgers, and first-year Ava Topolewski, among others. Topolewski earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors as the women's team took down ODU (232.00-61.00) and JMU (163.00-136.00), while the men's team defeated its only competition at the meet, ODU(167.00-95.00).
The Schaal Show:
In her first year, Barbara Schaal stamped her name into the GW record book. Schaal already owns GW's all-time 200-yard backstroke record along with the second fastest 100-yard backstroke time (behind junior Marlee Rickert). Now as a sophomore, Schaal is back to earning big points for the Buff and Blue, taking first place in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, and contributing to GW's first-place 400-yard medley relay at the last meet.
Magic Matic:
Redshirt junior Djurdje Matic is off to another hot start this season. Matic took second place in the 100-yard butterfly at the Virginia Tech meet, and followed that up with first place in the 100-butterfly at the ODU meet. The Belgrade, Serbia, native is already all over the GW record book, holding the all-time records for the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly, among other top-10 records.
A Look at Navy:
Navy is entering Friday's meet at 2-0 on the men's side and 1-1 on the women's side. The Midshipmen hosted its only competition of the year thus far, which was a tri-meet against Penn State and Boston College. Navy's lone defeat came to Penn State's women, while the Midshipmen's men edged out Penn State, 150-148, after earning the meet-winning points in the final race.
