Buff and Blue to play three straight at The Vern
GW men's soccer kicks off a run of three straight home games Tuesday afternoon when it welcomes James Madison to the Mount Vernon Campus for a non-conference matchup. The 2 p.m. start is set to be broadcast via ESPN+.
Please note that the university has revised and updated its visitor policy, adding new requirements for our guests to campus. Visitors need to attest that they are vaccinated, or if they are unvaccinated, attest that they have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their visit to campus, by registering here. Thank you for helping to keep GW safe.
LAST TIME OUT: GW scored its first road win of the season on Saturday, edging Fordham, 2-1, in a rematch of last spring's Atlantic 10 Championship final.
Tom Cooklin had a hand in both goals vs. the Rams, scoring in the 41st minute and then setting up Aaron Kronenberg's game-winner in the 71st minute.
Grady enjoyed a memorable day in the GW net, posting his first career assist on Cooklin's strike as well as a season-high five saves, including one in the final minute to secure the victory.
CHEF'S KISS: With his starring performance at Fordham, Cooklin has piled up six points in just five appearances this fall to rank second on the club.
The junior from Lewes, England, notched two assists in the season-opening win over VMI on Aug. 26 and another helper four days later at Howard before registering three more points in 48 minutes of action on Saturday.
Dating back to the spring season, Cooklin has 13 points in his past 12 games. The most notable play in that run came when he assisted on Sandro Weber's game-winner in the upset of Dayton in the A-10 Championship semifinals last April.
DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Grady's rare goalkeeper assist vs. Fordham came when his booming punt found the head of Haynes Brown and then the foot of Cooklin for a quick shot over the charging keeper for the game's first goal. The junior from Wyncote, Pa., became the 12th different member of the Buff and Blue to record a point this fall.
SCOUTING THE DUKES: JMU landed a 2-0 win over Elon on Saturday to improve to 7-2 on the season.
The defending CAA champion Dukes have three straight shutout wins, including a 1-0 defeat of Virginia in double-overtime last Tuesday. Luca Erhardt leads the offense with nine points via four goals and an assist.
UP NEXT: GW stays home for its next two A-10 contests, hosting Saint Joseph's (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.) and Dayton (Oct. 6, 1 p.m.) at The Vern.
