
Men's Soccer Clipped by JMU Comeback

Oscar Haynes Brown and Tom Cooklin scored Tuesday
WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer raced out to a fast start Tuesday afternoon, but James Madison answered back with three second-half goals, including the game-winner with 11 seconds left in regulation, to defeat the Buff and Blue, 3-2, on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Tom Cooklin and Oscar Haynes Brown scored within the game's 11:37 to push the home side to a quick two-goal lead that held into the second half before the defending CAA champion Dukes regrouped to mount the comeback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 6th Minute: Ryan Cedeno played a perfect long ball behind the defense to Cooklin, who gathered control in time to dribble around the goalkeeper and slip in a close-range shot. (GW 1, JMU 0)
- 12th Minute: GW was awarded a penalty kick after Cooklin was taken down in the box, and Haynes Brown converted the try to extend the lead. (GW 2, JMU 0)
- 47th Minute: JMU got on the board quickly out of the halftime break with Luca Ehrhardt finishing a cross from Clay Obara. (GW 2, JMU 1)
- 69th Minute: Ehrhardt netted the equalizer on a penalty kick. (GW 2, JMU 2)
- 90th Minute: With the final minute ticking away, Obara found room for a run down the left side, cut toward goal and sent a cross to Connor Hester, who managed to direct the game-winner into the right side of the net. (JMU 3, GW 2)
NOTEWORTHY
- Cooklin scored for the second straight game and now has eight points via two goals and four assists in six appearances this season.
- Haynes Brown was able to connect on the first penalty-kick try of his decorated career. It was his team-leading fourth goal of the season and his 26th as a member of the Buff and Blue.
- Cedeno picked up his third assist of the season to rank second on the team.
- GW outshot JMU, 7-3, during its sterling opening half. The Dukes flipped the script after halftime, holding a 10-4 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes.
- Justin Grady made three saves in the GW net, while JMU's Martin Leu stopped one shot in the victory.
- Matthew Brummet led the Buff and Blue with four shot attempts to set a career high.
UP NEXT: GW continues its homestand with a pair of upcoming A-10 contests at The Vern. The Buff and Blue will host Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., before welcoming Dayton on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
