Kronenberg netted game-winning score vs. Rams
BRONX, N.Y. - Tom Cooklin notched a first-half goal and later assisted Aaron Kronenberg's game-winner as GW men's soccer landed a 2-1 road victory over Fordham on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coffey Field.
With the game tied in the 71st minute, Cooklin and Kronenberg connected on the go-ahead score via a corner kick, and then the Buff and Blue were able to hold on from there, despite playing the final minutes down a man.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 41st Minute: GW took the lead with a quick strike from Cooklin. Justin Grady's booming punt found the head of Oscar Haynes Brown and caromed into space for Cooklin to flick over the charging goalkeeper. (GW 1, Fordham 0)
- 44th Minute: Just three minutes later, Fordham netted the equalizer, taking advantage of a handball in the box with a penalty kick goal from Max Rogers. (GW 1, Fordham 1)
- 71st Minute: Cooklin's corner kick slipped through the hands of the Fordham keeper, and Kronenberg was there at the goal line to poke it home for the go-ahead score. (GW 2, Fordham 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- Cooklin's tally was his first of the season and the third of his career. With six points this fall via a goal and four assists, the junior from Lewes, England, is second on the club behind only Haynes Brown.
- Both of Kronenberg's goals this season have come off corner kicks.
- Grady picked up a rare goalkeeper assist for his first career point, in addition to his fine work in net. The junior from Wyncote, Pa., made three of his season-high five saves after Kronenberg's go-ahead goal. His final stop came on an attempt by Rogers in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
- Haynes Brown was credited with his first assist of the season and the sixth of his career. He now has 56 points in 42 appearances as a member of the Buff and Blue.
- GW dug in defensively to close out the game playing a man down after Hrólfur Sveinsson was issued a red card in the 84th minute.
- It was a rematch of last spring's A-10 Championship final, which the Rams won 2-0 to claim the conference's automatic NCAA berth.
UP NEXT: GW begins a run of three straight home games on Tuesday, hosting James Madison in a 2 p.m. kickoff on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Buff and Blue also have A-10 home dates vs. Saint Joseph's (Oct. 2) and Dayton (Oct. 6) coming up.
Please note that the university has revised and updated its visitor policy, adding new requirements for our guests to campus. Beginning Sept. 27, visitors need to attest that they are vaccinated, or if they are unvaccinated, attest that they have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their visit to campus, by registering here.
