Cone closed tremendous career in Buff & Blue this spring
WASHINGTON - For the second time, recent GW softball alumna Jenna Cone has been named the athletic department's nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Following a fantastic final year representing the Buff and Blue, Cone is once again among an outstanding pool of candidates for the national accolade honoring the academic achievements, athletic excellence, community service work and leadership of graduating female student-athletes from all three divisions.
On and off the diamond, Cone embodied the department's pillars of discipline and excellence during a decorated five-year collegiate career.
After the COVID-19 pandemic cut short her senior season in 2020, the Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native returned as a graduate student and put together an unforgettable final chapter. She was named A-10 Player of the Year for the second time and an NFCA All-American this spring while helping the Buff and Blue claim Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
Cone posted a .415/.523/.880 slash line with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs across 48 games to pace a GW offense that ranked among the top five nationally in scoring at 7.0 runs per game. She was then named to the A-10 All-Championship Team after driving in six runs across GW's four wins on the way to the tournament title.
A four-time All-Conference and All-Region honoree, Cone finished with 73 home runs and 254 RBIs, totals that rank atop the A-10 record book and among the top 25 in NCAA history. She's also the program's all-time leader in hits (277), total bases (556), runs (195), on-base percentage (.492), slugging percentage (.784) and games played (239).
Cone showcased the same commitment in the classroom, earning an undergraduate degree in Communication before beginning work toward her master's in Media & Strategic Communication and compiling a 3.80 GPA this academic year. She was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2020 and remains in the running to make the list again after being named to the organization's All-District list earlier this month.
Throughout her time in Foggy Bottom, Cone stayed active in GW softball's community service efforts, particularly with Keen of Greater DC/Baltimore, a local organization that provides sports and recreational opportunities for youth with significant developmental and physical disabilities.
The A-10's Senior Woman Administrators will vote among 16 nominees from across the conference to select the two student-athletes who will represent the conference among the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year finalists.
