After spending her entire adult life at GW starring for George Washington as a gymnast, assistant coach and head coach, Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell has decided to step away from the sport.
"I am incredibly grateful for my time as the head coach at The George Washington University and for the opportunity to lead such an outstanding group of student-athletes," said Worrell. "The relationships, experiences, and memories I have gained here will always hold a special place in my heart. I truly appreciate my colleagues, student-athletes, alumni, and supporters who have made this experience so meaningful. Gymnastics has been part of my life since before I can remember and will always be part of who I am. At this time, I am stepping away from the sport, and I am excited to begin my next chapter. I look forward to being an enthusiastic alumna of GW Gymnastics and supporting the program for years to come."
In 2025, in her first season at the helm of the program at her alma mater, Worrell led GW gymnastics to its fourth East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) Championship, earning EAGL Coach of the Year honors in the process. She mentored then-sophomore Delaney DeHaan to EAGL Gymnast of the Year accolades and saw four team members qualify as individual competitors at NCAAs at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign. In 2026, another pair of Revolutionaries competed in postseason NCAA competition.Â
Named Associate Head Coach in August 2022, that year she helped coach GW to the program's third all-time EAGL crown. She also assisted with the development of two NCAA Regional Qualifiers. Worrell was instrumental in the gym and out, guiding a program that annually sees record levels of alumnae support and engagement.
With Worrell as a top lieutenant prior to her ascent to head coach, GW made NCAA Regionals as a team in five-consecutive years, punctuated when she was named EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year and National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018. She originally took up the coaching profession at GW in 2015 after graduating from GW with a degree in exercise science in 2013.
"Since her arrival at GW in 2009, Stephanie has fully dedicated herself to the gymnastics program and its student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Michael Lipitz. "She has served as a tremendous role model for the young women under her charge, instilling in them the competitive spirit needed to succeed in sport and the life skills to lead lives of consequence well beyond their years in Foggy Bottom. We wish Steph, her husband, Chris, and their daughters, Eleanor and Rosalyn, all the happiness they deserve in their next chapter."
A four-year letterwinner as a student-athlete, Worrell was a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier as an individual performer (2012, 2013). She was also an All-EAGL First Team performer on floor exercise and all-around as both a junior and senior. The Most Consistent Award was named "The Stoicovy" after her senior year of competing all-around in every competition and making every routine. In the classroom she was a two-time selection to the EAGL All-Academic Team and a 2013 Scholastic All-America honoree by the NACGC/W.
While coaching in 2019, she received her masters degree from the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
A national search for Worrell's replacement will begin immediately, led by Associate AD for Student-Athlete Health, Wellbeing and Performance and sport supervisor for gymnastics, Chris Hennelly. Â
