Veteran pitcher made 75 appearances at Stanford
WASHINGTON – Veteran pitcher Maddy Dwyer has joined George Washington softball as a graduate transfer, Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker announced Tuesday.
An Orange, Calif., native, Dwyer dons the Buff and Blue for her final collegiate season after making 75 appearances in the circle over the past four seasons at Stanford. The right-hander went 4-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 50 1/3 innings across 15 appearances last spring, including a complete-game victory vs. Manhattan at the Fayetteville Regional in NCAA play.
At GW, Dwyer, who graduated from Stanford in May with a bachelor's degree in American Studies, will pursue her master's in Media and Strategic Communication with aspirations to work in campaign communications.
"George Washington offered me the opportunity to continue my pursuit of academic excellence and contribute to an open intellectual community, all in the heart of Washington, D.C.," Dwyer said. "On top of this, the GW softball program is just getting started on its climb to greatness, and I wanted to be a part of it – to continue to build off of its foundation, win the A-10 title again and make a statement in the postseason."
Dwyer brings extensive experience competing vs. the nation's best to the Buff and Blue. Pitching for the Cardinal in the Pac-12, she tallied a 30-19 career record with a 2.76 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 296 2/3 innings pitched.
Dwyer bolsters a GW pitching staff that combined for a sparkling 1.97 ERA on the program's run to the Atlantic 10 title in 2021, led by conference Pitcher of the Year Sierra Lange, who returns as a graduate student in 2022.
"Maddy Dwyer is an incredible addition to GW softball, and we look for her to make an immediate impact," Schoonmaker said. "Maddy has played and achieved success at the highest levels and brings a wealth of experience with her to D.C. In addition to her playing acumen, she is a great teammate and a dedicated student with a commitment to excellence. We look forward to her finishing her career with GW across her chest."
As a rookie in 2018, Dwyer led Stanford in wins (12), innings pitched (125 1/3), saves (3), strikeouts (81) and ERA (2.46). She then helped the Cardinal to a berth in the 2019 NCAA Tournament as a sophomore with a 12-6 record and a team-best 3.12 ERA in 92 innings.
Dwyer pitched in seven games during the abbreviated 2020 season before aiding Stanford's NCAA push in her senior campaign. The experienced hurler came on strong down the stretch in 2021, closing the regular season with five shutout innings in a win vs. nationally-ranked Washington and then making two quality appearances at the NCAA Regional hosted by Arkansas.
Dwyer also boasts a decorated academic resume. She's been recognized with CoSIDA Academic All-District (2020) and Pac-12 All-Academic (2019) honors and twice named an Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete.
During her prep career at Orange Lutheran High School in Southern California, Dwyer was a three-time MaxPreps All-American, four-time Trinity League Pitcher of the Year and the 2017 Trinity League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
