Buff & Blue improve to 19-1 in A-10 play
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball celebrated Senior Day on the Mount Vernon Campus in style on Sunday by taking two games from George Mason to complete a weekend series sweep.
The Buff & Blue took the opener by a 3-1 score behind a dominant pitching effort from Sierra Lange before holding off the Patriots for a 5-4 victory in game two.
The program honored a decorated group featuring senior Sidney Bloomfield and graduate students Jenna Cone, Jessica Linquist, Amber Lotz and Faith Weber before the game, and all five of them made an impact on the field, combining for 12 hits, five runs scored and four RBIs across the twin bill.
The weekend ended in thrilling fashion with Lotz diving to snare a flare behind first base to ensure the tying run didn't score from second.
GW 3, George Mason 1:Â Lange was masterful in the opener, matching her career high 14 Ks while holding the Patriots without a hit after the opening inning.
George Mason jumped on top with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, but the Buff and Blue answered back with two in the bottom of the frame.
Linquist and Cone recorded singles to start the rally and came around to score on groundouts from Alessandra Ponce and Alexa Williams.
The Colonials stretched the lead to 3-1 in the second on an RBI double from Linquist.
That turned out to be the final margin thanks to Lange's excellence. The redshirt junior allowed just two more base runners after the rocky first. She retired the final 11 batters that she faced, seven of them via strikeout, to improve to 15-7 on the season.
The Senior Day honorees combined for eight of GW's nine hits: Bloomfield went 3-for-3, while Cone and Linquist also recorded multi-hit efforts.
GW 5, George Mason 4:Â The Buff and Blue built an early four-run lead in the second game and then held on late to complete the sweep.
The Patriots scored two runs in the top of the sixth and then pulled within a run on Haellie Gordon's solo homer with one out in the seventh.
Lange was called on to close out the victory, and she delivered, stranding the tying run in scoring position thanks to Lotz's defensive gem.
GW got out to a fast start, scoring four times in the first inning. Cone cracked her team-leading 15th home run of the season to start the scoring, and after the opposite-field, two-run shot, Weber and Hannah Eslick drove in runs.
After George Mason tallied an unearned run in the second, GW pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly from Eslick that scored Weber with a head-first dive into home plate.
Nine different Colonials recorded hits in the second game, while Cone and Eslick each knocked in a pair.
Weber reached twice with a single and a walk and also picked up her 12th win of the season. The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., pitched into the seventh, ceding four runs (three earned) on seven hits with eight Ks.
Up Next:Â With its place atop the A-10 Central Pod secure, GW closes out the regular season next weekend with a four-game set at Saint Bonaventure.
