Colonials match longest winning streak since 2010
The Colonials (16-10, 6-2) came out swinging with an 8-1, seven-inning, victory in the opener before the Wildcats (20-17, 4-8) eked out a 5-4 win in the finale, denying the Buff & Blue a series sweep and an eighth straight win.
Jaret Edwards was dominant on the hill in the first game, spinning a one-hit complete game for his third win of the season.
At the plate, Derek Ripp was 4-for-8 across the two games with a homer, three runs scored and five driven in. Noah Levin plated a pair and collected a pair of doubles while Steve Barmakian notched three knocks and scored three times.
GW 8, Davidson 1 (7 innings)
The graduate student allowed only one hit, a two-out single in the third, and was charged with an unearned run with four walks and four strikeouts while only needing 96 pitches to finish off the game.
GW gave Edwards all the support he would need with a five-run rally in the second inning. The Buff & Blue started the frame with five straight singles with Ripp and Tyler Hix driving in a run. After an Anthony Frechette sac fly, Cade Fergus singled in a tally and Levin brought home a run with a groundout.
Ripp blasted his third homer of the season in the fifth, a two-run shot to make it 7-0 before Levin scored Steve DiTomaso with an RBI double in the sixth for the final tally.
Davidson 5, GW 4
GW had the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two outs in the ninth, but a shocking pickoff at first ended the game.
Ripp started the scoring for the Buff & Blue with an RBI groundout in the top of the second, but the Wildcats bounced right back to take the lead with three in the home half.
Ripp cut the lead in half by scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth, but again the Wildcats answered with a run in the home half.
GW evened the game in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk by Barmakian and a Ripp sacrifice fly, but could not push the go-ahead run across. Overall, the Colonials were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Davidson's winning run in the eighth came as a result of two walks and a single to load the bases with one away before the sacrifice fly.
The Colonials return home this week for a non-conference matchup with Georgetown. The game has been moved to Wednesday with first pitch still set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
