Buff & Blue visit JMU on Wednesday
Fresh off another Atlantic 10 sweep, GW softball takes on a tough non-conference test Wednesday at No. 24 James Madison.
The Colonials and Dukes are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va., beginning at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW improved to 12-0 in A-10 play with a perfect weekend vs. Dayton on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Sierra Lange (2-0, 0.82 ERA in 17 innings) and Faith Weber (2-0, 1.56 ERA in nine innings) were tremendous in the circle over the four victories, lowering GW's staff ERA to 1.93 in the process.
Alessandra Ponce and Alexa Williams led the way offensively. Ponce had three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run that accounted for the only runs in the series opener, while Williams hit .417 with four extra-base hits while extending her hitting streak to 12 games.
TOUGH OUTS:Â GW's .342 team batting average ranks eighth nationally and tops in the A-10. The Buff and Blue are there thanks to a regular lineup that features six hitters (Sidney Bloomfield, Jessica Linquist, Jenn Cone, Lange, Williams and Weber)Â who are at .342 or better for the season.
GW set its program record for team batting average during Head Coach Shane Winkler's first season in 2019 when the squad hit .341 en route to a share of the A-10 Championship and its first postseason berth. The team finished that season ranked second in the nation in hitting, behind only national runner-up Oklahoma.
STRONG SPARK:Â Linquist continues to stoke the Buff and Blue with her production at the top of the lineup. The graduate student from West Deptford, N.J., is slashing .397/.594/.662 for the season with 27 runs scored in as many games.
The talented catcher ranks 10th nationally in OBP and also ranks among the top 60 across the country in walks per game (0.96), runs per game (1.00) and doubles per game (0.33).
SCOUTING THE DUKES:Â Following a weekend CAA sweep of UNCW, James Madison (19-1) moved into the ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll.
JMU ranks sixth nationally in homers per game (1.75) with 35 long balls through 20 contests, paced by eight from Kate Gordon. Rookie Alissa Humphrey has led the way in the circle, compiling a 9-0 record with a 1.02 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.
JMU and GW engaged in a memorable battle back on Feb. 27 in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader at the Cavalier Classic. The Colonials carried a three-run lead into the final inning before the Dukes erupted for a seven-spot to take an 8-4 victory.
