Buff & Blue improve to 12-0 in A-10 play
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball completed a weekend sweep of Dayton on Sunday, winning two more games on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue won the first game via run rule, 9-1 in five innings, before claiming a 4-1 victory in the series finale to improve to 12-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
First-year Alexa Williams had three extra-base hits on the day, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run home run in the second game, while the pitching duo of Sierra Lange and Faith Weber continued their strong work in the circle, allowing just a pair of solo home runs across 12 innings Sunday to finish the weekend with a combined 1.08 ERA.
Winners of 15 of their past 16 games overall, the Buff and Blue are now 11-1 in their home ballpark.
GW 9, Dayton 1 (5 innings):Â The Colonials scored in all five of their at-bats, claiming the run-rule victory on Jessica Linquist's walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the fifth.
After Dayton took an early 1-0 lead on a first-inning homer, Lange answered with her own solo shot in the bottom of the frame, and the home team was just getting started in a contest that featured hits from eight different Colonials.
In the second inning, the bottom of the order started a rally that led to Linquist bringing home a run with an HBP and a two-run single from Jenna Cone.
The Colonials added on with Alessandra Ponce's solo homer in the third before an RBI double from Weber made it 6-1. They manufactured a run in the fourth thanks to some smooth base-running from Darbie Stancil before Linquist's gapper ended it an inning later by bringing home Olivia Vinyard and Maggie Greco.
Weber and Abby Schaub both recorded a pair of hits, while Linquist drove in three runs to match a season high.
Ponce's long ball was her second in as many days and her seventh of the season.
In addition to her fourth homer of the spring, Lange took care of business in the circle, shaking off the early long ball to toss a five-inning complete game for her 11th win of the season. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, allowed seven hits but worked around trouble thanks to five strikeouts.
GW 4, Dayton 1:Â The Buff and Blue trailed 1-0 in the third when Williams greeted Dayton reliever Addy Bullis with her opposite-field, three-run homer over the right field fence.
That proved to be enough for GW thanks to Weber, who picked up the victory with four shutout innings of relief. After allowing a single and a double to start the seventh, she locked in and retired three straight Flyers to finish the victory.
In addition to her fourth homer of the season, Williams added a triple in the fifth inning. The rooke from El Cajon, Calif., now has a 12-game hitting streak after hitting .417 in the series with four of her five hits going for extra bases.
Lange proved a tough out in the second game, reaching in all three of her plate appearances. She drove in GW's other run with a two-out single in the fourth.
Up Next:Â GW is set to play its next eight games on the road, starting with Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader at James Madison.
