Alessandra Ponce drove in four of GW's five runs
WASHINGTONÂ - Boosted by the power of Alessandra Ponce, GW softball continued its unbeaten run in Atlantic 10 play by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader over Dayton on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Ponce provided all the offense in a 2-0 victory in the opener, cracking a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the second game, the senior from Henderson, Nev., smacked a two-run triple and later scored in the first inning, all of the Colonials' scoring in a 3-2 triumph.
Ponce finished the tightly-contested twin bill with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored to back a pair of strong pitching performances that helped the Buff and Blue reach 10-0 vs. conference opponents.
GW 2, Dayton 0:Â The Colonials had consistent traffic on the bases in the opener but couldn't push anything across until Ponce's blast broke the stalemate.
Jenna Cone opened the frame with a walk, and pinch runner Alena Ramirez moved to second on a sacrifice before Ponce launched a drive over the fence in left-center for her sixth long ball of the season.
Sierra Lange returned to the circle for the top of the seventh and quickly closed out the Flyers 1-2-3 to finish off a two-hit shutout. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, held the visitors hitless into the fifth and struck out four in her 10th career shutout and 10th victory of the season.
Jessica Linquist kept up her torrid streak with a pair of singles, while Cone reached twice with a hit and a walk. Alexa Williams and Hannah Eslick both recorded doubles in the victory.
GW 3, Dayton 2:Â The Colonials jumped on UD with a three-run first and then held on for a narrow victory.
Linquist (walk) and Cone (HBP) reached to open the game before Ponce slammed a line-drive triple to the fence in center. The lead reached 3-0 on Faith Weber's two-out double that brought in Ponce.
Weber turned in a quality start, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work while improving to 7-1 on the season. The graduate student from New Egypt, N.J., retired the first nine batters she faced before giving up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Lange returned to the circle to close out the victory, pitching the final two innings to earn her first save of the season. She allowed a leadoff single in the seventh before recording three straight outs, ending the game with a swinging strikeout.
Ponce's triple proved to be the key hit. It was her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
Weber's RBI double pushed her team-leading total to 28.
With a third-inning single, Williams extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
Up Next:Â GW and Dayton are scheduled to close out the series with another doubleheader at The Vern on Sunday, beginning at noon.
