Colonials swept out Saint Louis this weekend
The Buff and Blue opened the day with a 15-0 win over the Billikens before putting together a second dominant effort to run their Atlantic 10 record to 8-0 and their overall winning streak to 11.
Jenna Cone closed out an impressive weekend at the plate with four more hits, including three for extra bases, on Sunday, while Weber homered in both ends of the twin bill. Alessandra Ponce drove in a team-high six runs on the day on the strength of two doubles and a home run.
For the weekend, GW outscored SLU 42-6 thanks to a .442 team batting average and eight home runs across the four victories.
GW 15, Saint Louis 0 (5 innings):Â The Colonials started fast with a five-run first and never let up in the opener.
GW took advantage of seven walks to finish with 15 runs on 11 hits. The home team flexed its power with five doubles, a triple and three home runs, and nine different student-athletes scored runs in the offensive onslaught.
The Colonials were already up 2-0 in the first when Hannah Eslick ripped a two-out, two-run double to the left field fence. The senior shortstop later came around to score on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 5-0.
The home team batted around again and scored five more in the second. Alexa Williams slammed a two-run triple and Weber hit a two-run homer in the frame.
The hit parade continued in the third, highlighted by back-to-back long balls from Cone and Sierra Lange. Eslick's sac fly scoring Ponce later in the inning made it 14-0.
The top of GW's lineup showed its strength as 2-3-4-5 hitters Cone, Lange, Ponce and Williams each finished with two RBIs and two runs scored, while leadoff hitter Jessica Linquist reached in all three of her plate appearances and scored three runs.
In the circle, Lange and Weber combined on a two-hit shutout. Weber was credited with her sixth win of the season after tossing three scoreless frames of relief.
GW 9, Saint Louis 1 (5 innings):Â A SLU homer in the top of the fifth prevented the Colonials from claiming the run-rule victory there, opening the door for Weber's walk-off blast to lead off the bottom of the frame.
It was another offensive masterpiece for the Buff and Blue, who rolled up nine runs on 10 hits with five of them for extra bases.
Ponce staked the Buff and Blue to another early lead with a first-inning home run that made it 3-0 after four GW batters.
The scored stayed there until the third when the first five Colonials recorded hits as part of a five-run outburst. Ponce, Weber, Abby Schaub and Sidney Bloomfield drove in runs in the inning.
Ultimately, Weber's long ball - her second of the day and seventh of the season - would provide a satisfying punctuation to another splendid weekend.
Lange retired the first nine batters that she faced and kept the shutout into her final inning. She struck out five in a complete-game victory that improved her record to 9-5 on the season.
Ponce finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Weber went 2-for-3 with a double and the homer.
Cone posted her fifth straight multi-hit performance to finish the weekend hitting .692 (9-for-13) with three doubles and three homers.
UP NEXT:Â GW has a quality mid-week test coming Wednesday when it visits James Madison for a non-conference doubleheader. With two wins, the Colonials could equal the program record of 13 straight victories set during the 2018 campaign.
