Ioanna Mantzuratos led GW with five goals
WASHINGTON - The GW lacrosse team edged American 17-16 in a back-and-forth battle on Wednesday afternoon. After picking up its second road win of the season, GW now sits at 2-1.
In the first five minutes of play, American came out on the attack to take the early 2-0 lead. GW battled back to secure a 4-3 lead off of three successful free position goals by Amber Germer (2) and Ioanna Mantzouratos (1). Mantzouratos netted an additional goal giving GW the 5-3 advantage.
The Eagles responded giving GW a narrow one-goal lead, but no more than 30-seconds later, Phoebe Mullarkey fired one past AU's keeper, putting GW back up by two.
Alana Greene saw action for the first time this year, scoring for GW on her first shot attempt with 11 minutes left in the first half to put the Buff and Blue up, 7-5.
The teams traded goals, and AU capitalized on a big draw win in the last six minutes of the half leading to a game-tying goal by Emma Vinall, her third of the game.
After American got the equalizer, Mullarkey was cued on the other end with another immediate response making it 10-9 heading into halftime.
AU scored a quick two to start off the second half but GW went on its own scoring run, netting five unanswered until a strike by the Eagles with 12 minutes left to play. GW still led with a 15-11 lead, the largest lead of the game.
American found themselves right back within one after outscoring GW 4-1 in the remaining minutes. In its attempt to kill some clock, GW committed a shot clock violation putting the ball right back in the Eagles' pocket. The Eagles now had 30 seconds to work with to send the game to overtime.
Facing a last second shot, keeper Megan Patrick was able to come up with the save, giving GW its second consecutive win, 17-16.
