Buff and Blue wrap opening weekend at Cavalier Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - GW softball wrapped its opening weekend on Sunday, dropping both tightly contested ends of a doubleheader to host Virginia at Palmer Park.
The opener went extra innings with the Cavaliers claiming a 4-3 walk-off win in the ninth before the home team prevailed in the weekend finale, 3-1.
First-year Alexa Williams provided an offensive highlight in the final inning of the twin bill with her first career home run.
Virginia 4, GW 3 (9 innings): The Cavaliers won the opener in extra innings on Morgan Murphy's walk-off RBI double.
After ceding a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, GW answered right back in the top of the second with three runs to go in front. Jessica Linquist tied it with a two-run RBI single before Sierra Lange came up clutch with a two-out knock to bring in Sidney Bloomfield with the go-ahead run.
The score stayed there until the sixth inning when the Cavaliers scratched out the tying run with three straight singles, and the game continued into extra innings before the home team won it.
Lange battled in the circle in the second-longest outing of her career, working around 13 hits thanks to six strikeouts and some timely execution to go the distance.
At the top of the lineup, Linquist finished with two hits and the two RBIs, while Lange, Faith Weber and Bloomfield both reached twice with a hit and a walk.
Virginia 3, GW 1:Â In the nightcap, Weber engaged Mikayla Houge in a pitchers' duel that remained scoreless into the fifth inning.
The Cavaliers broke the stalemate with Donna Friedman's two-out RBI single and then added two more runs in the sixth to pad the lead.
GW got on the board in the seventh via the solo shot from Williams over the center field fence. It was the rookie's third hit of the opening weekend and second for extra bases.
Alessandra Ponce's second-inning single and Amber Lotz's third-inning double accounted for the Buff and Blue's other two hits vs. Houge, who picked up the complete-game victory.
In the GW circle, Weber allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings before being relieved by Lange.
UP NEXT:Â GW is set to welcome Mount St. Mary's to the Mount Vernon Campus for its home-opening doubleheader next Saturday before heading to Emmitsburg, Md., to visit the Mountaineers the next day.
