WASHINGTON-Â The George Washington lacrosse team is set to open its 2021 season when it hosts Navy on Saturday at 1 p.m.Â
GW's roster features six seniors, 10 juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen.Â
"For our first competition of 2021, we are honored to have an opportunity to compete against a well-coached and highly-skilled Navy program," said head coach Jenny Ulehla.
"This particular game will reveal our players' heart, determination, resilience and passion to play for each other, for GW and most importantly for the love of the game," Ulehla said. "We're excited to see what our players have inside them. It's time to learn, grow and experience joy in the competition."Â
OPERATIVE OFFENSE:Â GW's offense is led by Kendall Lambert, who recorded 11 goals last season as GW's second-leading scorer. Tori Hampton also reached double figures with 10 goals scored in 2020, and will continue to be an offensive weapon for GW this season. Ioanna Mantzouratos returns for her senior season after finding the back of the net six times in 2020. Catie Perkins also returns after starting all seven games in 2020, tallying four goals and five assists.
DEVELOPING DEFENSE:Â Defensively, GW returns Brynn Smith, who appeared in three games in 2020, picking up one ground ball. Sophomore Brianna Vaughan, junior Lauren Maline and first-year Alex Aufiero are expected to see their first action in a Buff and Blue uniform this season.
DEFENDING THE GOAL:Â Junior Megan Patrick returns after starting all seven contests for GW last season. Senior Alexa Solomon is expected to see action in net for the Buff and Blue after appearing in two games last season, making three saves.Â
WELCOMING THE MIDSHIPMEN:Â Navy is currently ranked No. 20 according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Midshipmen sit at 2-0 on the season and are led by Nicole Victory and Ellie Lecker with six goals apiece. This will be Navy's first road test of the season after hosting George Mason and Mount St. Mary's. The Midshipmen returned nine starters off of last year's roster, including two who were selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League team.Â
