Men's soccer standout honored after four-goal effort
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - George Washington's Oscar Haynes Brown was honored as the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Wednesday for his tremendous performance in last Saturday's overtime win at St. Bonaventure.
The graduate student from London, England, scored all four of the Buff and Blue's goals in their season finale vs. the Bonnies, including the OT game-winner in the 92nd minute.
With his second career four-goal performance, Haynes Brown became just the third student-athlete in the nation this season to score four times in a D-I game. He was previously named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week and recognized on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
"It was an unbelievable performance by Oscar," GW Head Coach Craig Jones said. "With what was at stake for both teams and being on the road, to score four goals was superb.
"He was working so hard on both sides of the ball. I was worried he wouldn't have the energy in those crucial moments in front of goal, but he was up for the challenge, showcasing the quality and goal-scoring ability that makes him such a special student-athlete to coach."
Haynes Brown got the scoring started vs. the Bonnies with a goal off an assist from Sandro Weber in the 11th minute. The veteran forward later converted a game-tying PK in the 48th minute and then scored again off a feed from Tim Neumann in the 61st minute to put the Buff and Blue up 3-2.
After the Bonnies equalized in the final minute of regulation, Haynes Brown swiftly played the hero, capping a memorable afternoon with the golden goal off a long throw-in from Joshua Yurasits less than two minutes into extra time. It was his fifth career OT goal and second of the season.
With his fantastic season finale, Haynes Brown wrapped the fall with nine goals and 19 points, both team highs. The two-time All-Conference selection now ranks seventh on the program's all-time scoring list with 31 career goals and ninth with 68 points.
