Colonials clash with Tritons on Saturday night
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball travels to California for the first time since 2013 as it begins a two-game swing with a matchup at UC San Diego on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
DEFEND THE ARC: Through two games, GW has allowed only four 3-pointers after limiting Saint Francis to 1-of-9 in the opener and holding Maryland without a longball for the first 25 minutes on Thursday. The Colonials are the top 3-point defense in the country among those who have played multiple games, ranking 20th overall in the metric (13.8%).
BLOCK PARTY: GW also paces the NCAA with 15 blocks on the season and is tied atop the country with San Francisco among teams who have played multiple games with 7.5 blocks per game. Ricky Lindo Jr. has been the primary catalyst with six rejections in the opener and two more on Thursday. His eight total blocks are second in the country.
BAM-BAM: After spending his first year at Virginia Tech, Joe Bamisile has burst onto the national scene with a pair of 20-point performances to open his GW career. The former top-100 recruit appeared in 13 games for the Hokies last season, scoring a total of 45 points. He's nearly matched that with 40 points this year, ranking fourth in the country in total points.
Bamisile is one of just two players to have posted a pair of 20-point games so far this season (Daylen Kountz, Northern Colorado). He is the second Colonial in as many years to start the year with back-to-back 20-point efforts (James Bishop).
A LOOK AT THE TRITONS: UC San Diego opened its season with an 80-67 road win at California, its first-ever program victory over a Pac-12 school and first-ever Division I road win. The Tritons are in their second year of a four-year transition from the Division II level and are thus ineligible for postseason play.
UCSD was 30-1 in its final Division II season in 2019-20 before going 7-10 in its first full D-I year. Toni Rocak led the Tritons in their season-opening win with 27 points and eight rebounds. Bryce Pope added 18 and Matt Gray contributed 10 points.
