GW and Hokies battle in second leg of home and home series
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball welcomes #24 Virginia Tech to the Smith Center on Thursday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.on NBC Sports Washington and ESPN+.
The match-up between the Colonials and the Hokies is the back end of a home-and-home series between the two teams, with the first leg being played last season down in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech took home the victory in last year's contest, 92-57.
LIVE AND LET TY
Tuesday's season-opening 58-47 victory was the Ty Moore show, as the grad student led the way on both sides of the court for GW. Moore, a D.C. native, registered her fifth career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Moore's double-double was the first by a Colonial in the regular season since Neila Luma's 10-point, 11-rebound performance against George Mason last season. Additionally, Moore became the first D.C. native to register a double-double in a contest since Jessica Adair put forth a 22-point, 11-rebound performance in the 2009 A-10 Tournament.
SMOTHERING SECOND HALF
George Washington's defense was the story of their victory against American, with particular emphasis on how they performed in the second half against the Eagles.
GW held American to just 24 points on 31% shooting in the second half of Tuesday's opener, including 2-of-10 from downtown. The Colonials also found a way to steal the rock and crash the boards in the final 20 minutes, outscoring American 12-4 on points from turnovers and 8-2 on second chance points.
HERE'S WHAT'S UP WITH THE HOKIES: Virginia Tech opened its year in dominant fashion with a 76-57 victory over Davidson on Tuesday. The Hokies' offense was relentless in the victory, shooting 46 percent from the field and a whopping 50 percent from beyond the arc. Three players finished in double figures for VT, including graduate student and preseason All-ACC selection Aisha Sheppard, who had 25 points and four assists
Virginia Tech enters the season having been picked to finish fourth in the ACC. In addition to Sheppard, they're led by junior center Elizabeth Kitley, who was named alongside Sheppard to the Wooden Award watch list.
