Buff & Blue to honor two seniors and five graduate students
GW men's soccer hosts nationally-ranked Saint Louis on Saturday as it celebrates Senior Day on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue are set to honor seniors Cameron Mathewson and Alhaji Turay as well as graduate students Oscar Haynes Brown, Matthew Brummet, Hrólfur Sveinsson, Sandro Weber and Joshua Yurasits before the 1 p.m. kickoff vs. the A-10 leading Billikens, who are unbeaten and ranked No. 12 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll.
Please note that the university has revised and updated its visitor policy, adding new requirements for our guests to campus. Visitors need to attest that they are vaccinated, or if they are unvaccinated, attest that they have received a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their visit to campus, by registering here. Thank you for helping to keep GW safe.
LAST TIME OUT: GW secured three crucial points in the A-10 standings on Wednesday by edging George Mason, 2-1, in overtime on Haynes Brown's penalty kick.
The Buff and Blue went in front on Demi Amigun's goal in the 62nd minute and then worked into overtime after the Patriots netted a late equalizer. In the 98th minute, Haynes Brown came up clutch, drawing and then burying the PK for the golden goal.
THANK YOU, SENIORS: The seven Senior Day honorees have combined to make 313 appearances and log 18,496 total minutes as members of the Buff and Blue.
Yurasits leads the way in both categories. As a fixture of the Buff and Blue defense over the past five seasons, the graduate student from North Wales, Pa., has started 66 of the 69 games in which he's appeared and totaled 5,862 minutes.
MAKING HIS MARK: With his game-winner on Wednesday, Haynes Brown now has 27 career goals, which is tied with Orville Reynolds ('84-87), Kenny Emson ('85-88) and Marcelo Valencia ('91-94) for 10th-most in program history. The graduate student from London, England, needs one more to tie Ken Garber ('71-74) for eighth on the list.
Haynes Brown has 60 points via 27 goals and six assists in 48 career games. That total includes 10 game-winning goals with four of those coming in overtime.
STANDINGS CHECK: GW enters the home stretch of the regular season, looking to secure a spot in the eight-team A-10 Championship field.
With two matches remaining, the Buff and Blue (2-3-1) are tied for ninth place with Dayton at seven points. UMass and Davidson currently occupy the last two spots in the field with eight points apiece.
MARQUEE MATCHUP: This marks the fifth time in six seasons that GW has faced off against a ranked opponent.
Most recently, the Buff and Blue battled top-ranked Virginia in a 3-0 setback on Oct. 1, 2019. Their last victory against a ranked foe came when they defeated No. 22 Navy, 2-1, in double overtime on Sept. 16, 2014.
SCOUTING THE BILLIKENS: Saint Louis (10-0-3 overall) has won all six of its A-10 games while outscoring its opponents 18-5 along the way. The Billikens can clinch the conference regular season title with a win on Saturday.
SLU ranks 12th nationally at 2.46 goals per game, led by John Klein, who leads the country with 12 assists, and Simon Becher, who ranks second in the conference with nine goals. The Billikens have also gotten it done defensively with six shutouts and a 0.77 goals against average.
