GW bolsters roster with standout point guard
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball head coach Jennifer Rizzotti announced on Thursday the addition of first-year Piper Macke to the 2020-21 roster as a walk-on.
"We are very excited to welcome Piper to GW," Rizzotti said. "We are always looking for players that are eager to be part of our women's basketball family. In a time when things have been so far from normal, Piper took a chance on us and has brought the kind of investment and energy we want from all of our incoming student-athletes.
"She is a talented, scrappy and hardworking player that will be a great addition to our team, and I am grateful she decided to join us this year."
A native of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Macke recorded a decorated career at Highlands High School. As a four-year starter (including one year at Holy Cross District HS), she led her team to four consecutive district championships and averaged 12.2 ppg, 4.5 apg and 3.0 spg for a program that was a perennial top 10 team in the state of Kentucky.
Macke finished her career in style her senior year by being named the MVP of the district tournament while accruing All-District and All-Region accolades for the second time in as many years. She also starred as a point guard for the Kentucky Royals AAU program, helping advance the program to the AAU Division I National Championship game.
"I'm extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play at GW and be welcomed so wholeheartedly by the coaches and such an amazing group of women," Macke said. "Making the decision to take a chance and come to campus has already ended up being one of the best choices I've made in my life. I can't wait to see what this season will bring."
The 5'7" point guard is the second member of her family to play Division I basketball, joining her brother Spencer, who currently plays at West Virginia. She is the fourth first-year on this year's 12-member roster joining Ali Brigham, Aurea Gingras and Caranda Perea.
