LEXINGTON, Ky. -Â The George Washington volleyball team has been honored with the United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 academic year.
The award recognizes collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. GW accumulated a 3.41 team GPA over both semesters this past year.
"Our student-athletes have shown that they push themselves both on the court and in the classroom," said head coach Sarah Bernson. "Many have chosen challenging majors and courses and do so with the confidence that the curriculum will push and lead them to their goal of development and future careers. For this past year's group to persevere through the quick change to full online learning, in many cases making their courses harder, shows their determination to succeed. They did so by raising the team's GPA from the fall semester."
A record total of 1,313 teams across NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, along with two- and four-year colleges and high schools, earned the honor, which breaks the record set the previous season by more than 200.
Ten members of the 2019-20 squad were recently named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for achieving a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the academic season. Graduate student Caroline Sklaver and senior Skylar Iott each posted a 4.0 GPA in at least one of the semesters this year.
"Academics has always been a priority of mine," Sklaver said. "Joining a team that shares those values was very encouraging and added to our sense of team comradery."
