WASHINGTON -Â Recent GW graduate Skylar Iott was named the team's MVP for the 2019 season on Wednesday, capping off an impressive career in Buff & Blue that saw her pepper the record books.
"Starting last season, Skylar really grew into our offensive leader," said head coach Sarah Bernson. "Her six-rotation role showcased her ability to pass and hit, which was a huge asset to our performance. Jaimeson (Lee) and the team counted on her to provide us not only the outside hitter kills, but the clutch attacks as well. As a part of a large senior class that contributed to our success in so many ways, Skylar was our team's principal point scoring option and emotional driver of this season." Â
Iott earned Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference honors in her senior campaign, leading the team in kills (395) and points (447). She ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in the categories, averaging 3.99 kills and 4.52 points per set.Â
For her career, the Ida, Mich., native racked up 1,133 career kills, good for sixth all-time in program history. Her 3,567 career attempts placed her fourth in the program record book.
While Iott's presence on the floor was impressive, it was what she did away from the court with her teammates and in the community that gave her the well-rounded profile of a team MVP.
"Coming into a new program I could immediately tell that Skylar was a force to be reckoned with," said assistant coach Brianna Barry. "She led the team this past season with her passion on the court and her ability to score big points when the team needed them. She was able to give back to the community with her work with the Grassroots program and left a legacy behind for her teammates to follow in the coming years."Â
Same held true for the weight room, where strength and conditioning coach Simone Morin saw the beginnings for success before the season even began.
"Skylar pushed herself all last off-season in the weight room and brought her teammates up with her along the way," Morin said. "Her work ethic and desire to get better showed this season when she was a solid foundation for this team and a consistent threat to anyone opponent across the net. Skylar will be missed both on the court and in the weight room next season."
The team MVP award has been given out each year in the program since 1988. Iott joins a list of GW greats that includes three All-Americans:
1988: Cheryl Farley
