Levin extends hitting streak to nine straight
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball dropped the rubber game of its weekend set with Monmouth on Sunday afternoon, 4-2, at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials once again received a solid pitching performance, this time from senior Elliot Raimo, who limited the Hawks to just two earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. However, an unearned run, Monmouth's fourth of the weekend, proved to be the eventual game-winning tally.
The Hawks utilized three singles and a hit batter to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but GW came right back to even the game in the home half. The first four batters of the frame reached, culminating in an RBI single for first-year Joe Biancone.
After a double play, back-to-back hit batters forced in a run as first-year Steve DiTomaso was credited with the game-tying RBI.
The Colonials had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the third inning with runners at second and third and nobody out, but a baserunning mix-up turned into a double play that killed the rally.
The Buff & Blue were held in check after the third, recording just two singles, one of which was immediately erased on the Hawks' fourth twin-killing of the game.
Monmouth moved ahead in the fifth thanks to a two-out RBI single that plated Dennis Filipovski, who had reached on an error to lead off the inning. A sac fly in the eighth gave the Hawks insurance for the two-run win.
Seven different Colonials registered a hit in the game, led by sophomore Noah Levin's 2-for-4 day that extended his hitting streak to nine in a row. Redshirt sophomore Derek Ripp reached base three times with two hits and a walk.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, welcoming Towson for a 3 p.m. first pitch. GW then finishes out its eight-game homestand next weekend with a three-game set against NJIT beginning Friday.
