Men's Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale at #3 Dayton, 76-51
3/7/2020 9:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio — First-year Jamison Battle led the Colonials with 16 points on 6-of-13 from the field, but Dayton used a second-half run to halt the Colonials' hopes of knocking off the nationally ranked team, 76-51, on Saturday evening at UD Arena.
Dayton's Obi Toppin led all scorers with 27 points and Jalen Crutcher added 21 points to lead the Flyers, who became just the fifth team to go undefeated in Atlantic 10 play.
GW trailed 26-25 at the half, but not after forcing Dayton out of its comfort zone from the start. First-year Chase Paar put the Colonials ahead with a turnaround jumper 30 seconds into the contest that sparked a fire in the heart of the Colonials.
With a sold-out, raucous UD Arena crowd behind their Flyers, GW went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-12 lead after redshirt senior Armel Potter drove the lane at the 9:24 mark of the half.
In the second half, Potter tied the game at 37-37 on a layup with 13:57 remaining, before Dayton pulled away with a 23-4 run to take a 60-41 advantage at the 6:04 mark.
With the regular season concluded, GW will now enter the Atlantic 10 Championship as the 11-seed and will take on 14-seed Fordham in the first round on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. (ESPN+, TuneIn radio app).
