An Incomer's Perspective: Tyler Brelsford, Men's Basketball Class of 2024

Hello GDub,
I'm Tyler Brelsford, an incoming men's basketball student-athlete in the Class of 2024. Soon I will graduate from Mount Saint Joseph's High School in Baltimore, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to wear a Colonials jersey this fall.
I've been asked to put together my thoughts and outline how an incoming student-athlete is handling these tough times. Right now, it's been a big adjustment, especially since we can't play basketball or get shots up at the gym.
All the local gyms have been shut down, so the only real workouts I've been able to do are at home in my basement gym. I haven't really left the house that much during this time. I'm definitely trying to maintain my distance from people, especially since this virus is highly contagious.
My mom has a list of outdoor chores to prepare for the spring, which I'm not looking forward to, but there's no escaping when nearly everything is shut down. Schoolwork is pretty much the same. We are attending virtual classes at MSJ since we've been provided with iPads since 9th grade. It's actually nice to be able to attend classes from home. Still, I'm sure that at some point, I'll miss attending actual classes and engaging with my classmates.
So, what are some of the things that I will do to help prepare myself to become a Colonial?
My first priority is to set a schedule and stick to it. In speaking with some of my future teammates, I realize that developing and maintaining a balanced plan of action is key, especially with our travel schedule and coursework at GW.
I will also focus on getting stronger on-and-off the court, given that there's a big difference in high school to college basketball. I plan to ask my trainer for an at-home regimen since no one is really sure how long everything will be shut down. My focus will be on running, lifting and eating a healthy diet, especially since I will be at home.
In terms of academics, my mom always tells me that this break from school is not really a break and to make sure that I take my schoolwork as seriously as I did before the virus hit. I definitely want to ensure that I'm academically prepared for what GW has to offer. Plus, my mom will not let up on the gas.
Until then, please stay safe. I look forward to joining this great team and university in the fall.
Thanks,
Tyler B.
