Colonials tab Bowman, Welch to lead team
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball has named sophomore Bella Bowman and junior Sydney Welch as captains beginning in the 2020 spring season. The duo will help lead the team into a spring schedule that features three tournaments.
"As we transition into the 2020 season, Bella and Syd will provide consistent and different voices in our team leadership," said head coach Sarah Bernson. "Sydney is a strong relationship builder and an effective 1-on-1 communicator. Bella balances out the leadership communication as she is a strong communal voice and direct action taker.
"Both have contributed in matches during their time here and have helped our growing success. They are already assisting the program as we gain experience and confidence with the exciting roster of athletes that is forming for 2020."
Bowman has been a mainstay for the Colonials at libero during her first two years. She has played over 200 sets in 55 matches, leading the team in digs each of her first two years. Her 473 digs as a first-year were the seventh-most in a single season in program history.
Welch has also played in every set each of the last two seasons, appearing in 87 matches and 322 sets overall during her career as a libero and defensive specialist. This past year, she finished in the top five on the team in digs, assists and service aces.
Both hail from Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky. and are currently leading the team this spring as the program prepares for the 2020 season.
