Colonials slugged their way past UNCW
The Colonials scored in every inning vs. the tournament host, piling up season highs in runs and hits (18) in the opener of a doubleheader at the Seahawk Softball Classic.
GW dropped the second game of the twinbill to Eastern Kentucky, 4-2.
Cone, Jessica Linquist and Sidney Bloomfield all finished with four hits on the day, while Elena Shelepak drove in a team-high four runs.
GW 15, UNCW 10:Â The Colonials plated two runs on four hits in the opening frame and kept on hitting in the opener.
Weber's home run in the top of the third extended the lead to 6-0, and Cone followed with her blast an inning later. Ponce's first long ball of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 9-3.
GW extended the lead to eight runs later in the inning on run-scoring hits from Shelepak and Linquist before UNCW came roaring back.
After the Seahawks put together a six-run fifth, Shelepak answered with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to expand the cushion. The Colonials would take advantage of a pair of errors to tally two more in the seventh to cap their impressive offensive display.
All nine Colonials in the starting batting order reached base at least once.
Cone and Linquist both finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Ponce had three hits and drove in three.
Shelepak and Weber also provided two hits and three RBIs apiece in the victory.
Weber also picked up her second victory of the season. The senior from New Jersey tossed the first four innings and then returned for the seventh to close out the Seahawks. She set a career high with eight strikeouts.
EKU 4, GW 2:Â The Colonels took the lead with a three-run second inning and held on to defeat the Colonials for the second straight day.
GW took an early 1-0 lead on Shelepak's RBI single to score Jessica Linquist with two outs in the first. EKU tied it in the second on a fielder's choice and then jumped ahead on Sammi Miller's two-run double.
The Colonials got one back in the third. Sidney Bloomfield ripped a triple and later raced in to score with Elena Shelepak caught in a rundown on a steal attempt.
EKU shut down the Colonials the rest of the way. Samantha Reynoso retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced, limiting the Buff and Blue to two runs on six hits in a complete-game win.
Bloomfield equaled her career high with three hits, highlighted by her first triple of the season and the seventh of her career. Hannah Eslick added two hits, including a fourth-inning double.
Weber went the distance in the circle in the second game, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
ON DECK:Â GW finishes out its weekend Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. start vs. Brown. The Buff and Blue will make their debut on the Mount Vernon Campus next weekend for the Colonial Classic with four games over three days, beginning Friday.
