Colonials scheduled to play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday
***Note: Forecasted weather has altered the original schedule.***
GW softball continues its rigorous early-season slate this weekend with a trip to UNCW's Seahawk Softball Classic.
The Colonials are set to play four games over three days at Boseman Field in Wilmington, N.C. The Buff and Blue will meet Eastern Kentucky on Friday afternoon before facing the host Seahawks and Eastern Kentucky again on Saturday. They'll wrap the weekend Sunday morning vs. Brown.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW dropped four out of five games at ECU's Pirate Clash with the victory a come-from-behind effort to take down three-time defending Big East champion DePaul. The Colonials went ahead on Jenna Cone's three-run home run with one out in the top of the seventh and held on to win, 6-5.
Priscilla Martinez led GW at the plate, reaching base in all five games and posting a .455/.588/.818 slash line. The senior from California recorded five hits, including a home run and a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored, plus five walks.
Mia Parker was excellent in the circle late in the weekend, posting a 0.78 ERA in nine innings over two appearances. The sophomore from California earned her first career start for Sunday's finale and responded by tossing a complete game in which she did not allow an earned run vs. host ECU.
SENIOR SAVVY:Â Thanks to a veteran approach at the plate, Martinez has her senior season off to a tremendous start. Through 10 games, she leads the Colonials in batting average (.318), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging percentage (.500). She's demonstrated her patience by drawing a team-high eight walks.
Martinez has reached base in eight of 10 contests, including a six-game streak that started with an RBI single vs. No. 3 Oklahoma on Feb. 8. Her best performance so far came in the win over DePaul when she went 2-for-3 with a walk and her first homer of the season.
BIG SWING:Â With her go-ahead home run vs. DePaul, Cone became the program's career leader in extra-base hits, passing Victoria Valos (2012-15). The senior from California now has 92 extra-base hits with 52 homers, 37 doubles and three triples. Her 570 total bases are also a program all-time best.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â Eastern Kentucky is off to a 7-2 start after taking four of five games at last weekend's Winthrop Invitational. The Colonels won 35 games last season, including a 1-2 showing at the National Invitational Softball Championship.
UNCW sits at 1-8 after taking on a tough schedule over the season's opening two weekends. Five of the Seahawks' losses have come vs. SEC competition (0-2 vs. Georgia, 0-3 vs. Auburn).
Brown is making its season debut this weekend. The Bears were tabbed seventh in the Ivy League preseason poll.
ON DECK:Â GW opens its home slate next weekend with the three-day Colonial Classic on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Buff and Blue will play Princeton, Towson, Georgetown and Morgan State as part of the event.
