Newcomers Boselli and Biancone come up big in 6-4 win
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball used a pair of runs in the last of the eighth to break open a 4-4 deadlock and square up its weekend series with Marist, besting the Red Foxes, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Prior to the offensive heroics, it was an outfield assist from junior Domenic Boselli in the top of the eighth that preserved the deadlock. With two on and two down, Marist's Patrick Lightner singled to left, but Boselli denied the run-scoring opportunity with a perfect throw to the plate, nailing Dylan Hoy to keep things even.
GW then used the momentum to move in front in the home half with Boselli singling and promptly scoring on an RBI triple from first-year Joe Biancone to make it 5-4. Biancone then scored on a suicide squeeze from redshirt sophomore Derek Ripp to put the Buff & Blue up two.
Junior Trevor Kuncl came on to face the tying run in the top of the ninth after a leadoff walk and induced a double play and a strikeout to earn his second save of the year.
Senior Keagan McGinnis earned the win for the Colonials in relief, striking out a pair in 1.1 scoreless innings. Junior starter Justin Solt lasted 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening five innings, resulting in the 4-4 stalemate. Boselli had the only run-scoring hit prior to Biancone's triple, singling in a run in the home half of the third. Overall, the junior college transfer led the Colonial offense with three hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Ripp and sophomore Noah Levin provided a pair of knocks each as part of an 11-hit attack.
The two teams are set to square off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday at the Tuck with first pitch scheduled for noon.
