
Softball Falls Twice at Pirate Clash

Colonials came up short vs. Hampton and ECU
GREENVILLE, N.C. - GW softball continued its stay at the Pirate Clash on Saturday, dropping a pair of contests at ECU Softball Stadium.
The Colonials were stopped by Hampton, 10-3, in the opener before coming up short vs. host East Carolina, 9-3, in the second game.
Jenna Cone went deep for the second straight day with a two-run shot in the second game, while Faith Weber tallied a team-high four hits on the day, including a three-hit effort in the opener to equal her career high.
Hampton 10, GW 3: The Pirates scored in five of their six at-bats to beat the Colonials for the second straight day.
Hampton built an 8-0 lead before Weber's two-run double with two outs in the fifth extended the game. Priscilla Martinez knocked in GW's other run in the sixth with a sac fly to score Maggie Greco.
Weber finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Martinez and Alessandra Ponce both reached base three times. The Colonials generated at least one base runner in every inning thanks to eight hits and six walks.
ECU 9, GW 3:Â Host ECU piled up eight runs over the first three innings to send the Colonials to their second loss of the day.
Cone's third-inning homer over the fence in left brought GW within 5-2, but the Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to build its cushion.
Cone finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. The 52nd homer of her decorated career puts her season total at seven RBIs through nine games.
Jessica Linquist went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs vs. ECU, while Shelepak picked up an RBI with a sac fly to score Linquist in the fifth inning.
Mia Parker turned a strong pitching effort, allowing just one run on two hits in three innings of relief. It was the longest outing of the sophomore's career.
ON DECK:Â GW closes out its weekend in North Carolina on Sunday with another matchup vs. ECU, starting at 11:30 a.m. The Colonials will return to the Tar Heel State next weekend for UNCW's Seahawk Softball Classic.
