FAIRFAX, Va. — Armel Potter returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing three games and made a significant impact leading George Washington with a game-high 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds against George Mason, in a 73-67 win at EagleBank Arena.
Junior Maceo Jack added 19 points on 7-of-9 from the field and knocked down four buckets from downtown. First-year Jameer Nelson Jr. had 16 points but made his biggest impact with 10 fouls drawn. Classmate Jamison Battle dropped 13 points with a pair of baskets from long-distance.
Mason led 9-5 early in the contest before Battle hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 15:48 left. The Patriots then went on an 8-0 run before momentum swung in favor of GW with an 11-2 spurt thanks in part to a four-point play by Battle, and a three-point play by Jack to end the run up 20-18.
The Colonials went into the locker room trailing 30-28 after Potter grabbed a defensive rebound and raced down the court to beat the expiring clock.
GW took control in the second half after Jack hit from the outside at the 16-minute mark. Although the lead never reached double figures, the visitors controlled the tempo in the final frame.
Late in the contest, the Patriots threatened by cutting a nine-point GW lead down to three (66-63) with 1:22 left.
The final minute saw the Colonials knock down all four of their attempted free throws and draw a pair of fouls on the defensive end.
Xavier Johnson led the Patriots with 17 points and Josh Oduro had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
The win gives GW a sweep over the Patriots in the Revolutionary Rivalry this season, good for two points in the Athletics Department's quest to reclaim the Tricorn Hat Trophy.
The Colonials will hit the road for their matchup on Wednesday at Duquesne at 8 p.m. on ESPN+ and TuneIn radio app.
